Peg Laycock
I am an island girl. Although I am native Hoosier, I spent each summer until I was 20 on a small primitive island in Northern Ontario. With no tv or electricity, each day was filled with catching bullfrogs and sunfish, watching osprey, and listening to the music of songbirds. As a young adult I became an avid photographer, determined to capture the beauty of the North American and Canadian wilderness. Though I spent the next 30 years in medical training and working in a fulfilling career as a Neurologist in Indiana, I dreamt of returning to the Northern woodlands I had always loved.
I handbuild each stoneware sculpture using photographs, drawings and personal observations for reference. As I sculpt, the clay dictates the path I take and I often deviate from my original plan. As a result of this freestyle approach, each piece is unique.
Ceramic sculpting combines my love of the arts, animals, experimentation, and play. I hope that my pieces reflect the incredible beauty that surrounds us every day — if only we take a moment to look for it!
