Avi Shmueli

I grew up in Israel, where my mother was a graphic designer who later became a successful children's book illustrator. In the 1990's, I emigrated to the United States and spent several years away from art, working in various software developments roles, before eventually relocating to the Seattle area. There, we quickly discovered Orcas and fell in love with the island.

Several years ago, my wife, Andrea Reback, and I moved full-time to the island, where I began to acclimate to my new environment. The island offered a green, remote, and quiet setting, often dark and wet. To process this scenery, I picked up painting. Working primarily in landscape and impressionistic styles, most of my work consists of rural scenes from the areas I explore on walks with my dog, Ranger.

My typical workflow involves capturing snapshots of subject matter, processing them digitally using various filters for inspiration, and sometimes editing them for composition. I then move to the canvas from the comfort of my studio. While there is an amount of planning and preparation involved, the final painting is always a rewarding surprise.
