The Orcas Island Artworks features figurative sculptures by Peter Pere through the month of May.

The exhibit includes wall hung plaster relief sculptures and free standing ceramic renditions of portraits, busts and torsos. Peter demonstrates two stylistic approaches – one classical and formal, the other more interpretative, reflecting on the sorrows and joys of life and hints of his subjects’ inner struggles.

Peter has had a long career as a university administrator and as a small business owner. He and his wife Molly, who is also an artist, have been part time residents of Orcas for over twenty years. Throughout his work career he pursued his passion for sculpture part time, studying at the University of Wisconsin, Pratt Institute and Gage Academy.

The Artworks is open daily from 10 to 6.

The Orcas Island Artworks features paintings by Jan Rimerman from March 27 through April 28.

Jan Rimerman’s Island Collection is inspired by Orcas Island and the natural beauty found in the San Juan Islands. The constantly changing light and shadow are intriguing and a challenge to capture in a painting. Working in the studio on Orcas Island has allowed her to incorporate that magic island light and the crisp edge of the sea breeze. As the birds land on her painting table and dine on sunflower seeds she attempts to find the essence of island energy.

Experiencing new places rejuvenates her creative interpretations. However, the color, texture and light of the island always calls her home. Jan’s artistic journey has allowed her to explore China, South America, the British Isles, Western and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Indonesia.

Applying powdered charcoal, crackle and molding paste and then adding thin layers of transparent acrylic paint gives Jan’s work a unique style. Building up these various textures and color creates a three dimensional quality. As many as 22 layers of paint are applied on top of the initial foundations. This layering reveals hidden images which change in the different light during the progression of the day & season. The work presents something fresh each time you view it.

New Glass Art Added to Artworks Gallery Web Store

We have just added new glass art by April Pollock to the Artworks Gallery web store http://www.orcasartworks.com/store/ . April loves to gather glass jars, old lighting fixtures and bottles and turn them into treasures. She transforms the glass pieces with decorations of bent wire and accents of beads and old metals. Many of the artworks will hold water for flower bouquets. Others hold sand, moss and candles. All are true trash to treasures. She also shows her glass art at the gallery.

New Card Sets from Caroline Buchanan in Web Store

We have just added 2 sets of Caroline Buchanan’s watercolor cards to the Artwork’s web store. One set is a Dahlia Collection with 3 designs of Caroline’s beautiful flowers. The other set is cards and postcards of many of Caroline’s favorite island paintings. Both can be found in our web store or in the gallery. Gallery hours are currently 10am to 5pm every day.

Rob Thornber Bowls in Bon Appetit

Artworks artist, Rob Thornber , has a write up in the February 2013 issue of the national foodie magazine, Bon Appetit. The editors included a photo of Rob’s bowls with the write up. The gallery web site has received orders from the article and emails asking about the bowls. Way to go Rob!

New Additions to the Artworks Web Store

The Artworks Gallery may be closed until February 16th, but the web store is open and filling with new artisan works. There is now a greeting card catagory and we have added cards by Ann Jones, Holly Larson, Janis Mattox and Shawna Franklin. These are suitable for framing and make a nice gift.

Also added are prints by Caroline Buchanan and Ann Jones, felted hats by Maureen Hannon and new ceramics by Mary Jane Elgin. There are new journal books by Susie Shipman in several colors…perfect for that winter trip! And new reverse glaze sculptures by Ellen Wherrette .

Appearing for the first time in the web store are Kathy Schradle with her handmade Meander Bags for runners and beachcombers and Steve Emmes with his beautiful cutting boards with whale, knife and leaf designs. Both of these artists are very popular with our summer visitors to the gallery. So come and browse online while January winds are blowing and the gallery is closed.

Orcas Artworks Winter Closing

close for our annual spruce up and cleaning time. The gallery will be closed

PAINTINGS BY B.J. ARNOLD AT ARTWORKS

The Orcas Island Artworks will feature abstract paintings by B.J. Arnold through the months of November and December.

Arnold’s approach to painting is experimental. “I enjoy playing with squares and rectangles punctuated with circles and undulating lines to soften. I frequently begin a piece with a collage, which provides texture, even though I might paint over and obscure it completely. The core elements of my process are desire for beauty, love of color, discipline and daring.”
